In 1995 the ACWA made the first of several visits to Fort Point. This Federal fort, now open as a National Historical Site, protected the San Francisco Bay from its vantage point at the opening of the Golden Gate. (In the 20th Century the Golden Gate Bridge was built in such a way to avoid the fort's destruction.) While constructed much like Fort Sumter, which had proved inadequate against the South's cannon bombardment, its presence nonetheless helped to prevent any attempted entries of Confederate ships.
