Old West Reenactment in Calico, CA

Once again Andy "Sourdough" Moore and I were able to help judge the Old West reenactor skits presented by some of the best groups in the country. The Old West History Foundation's annual National Showdown was held during Calico Ghost Town's Heritage Fest November 27th and 28th, 1999. Dusty Webb, founder and national director of the OWLHF, oversaw the competition, and actor/singer Jon Locke entertained us with his song renditions. The other judges included western artist Katie West, movie producer Joe Donato, actor Peter Sherayko, and "Dutch" of SASS and The Happy Trails Foundation. We were ably assisted by Doris Warren (score keeper) and Debbie Cooper (time keeper).

The Tombstone Cowboys were announced as the 1999 National Champions at the awards ceremony held on Sunday.

Calico's Heritage Fest offered a full three days of entertainment. Among the musical performers were the band Double Action and singer/songwriter Ernie Sites. Cowboy Cal performed rope twirling and gun spinning with the assistance of his horse. The Calico Regulators presented shootouts on a regular basis and the Mojave Muleskinners robbed the train. For those folks new to Calico, free town tours were given so that they would know more about Calico's history and landmarks. The OWLHF Banquet was held Saturday night at the Calico House Restaurant--we all enjoyed a delicious pig roast dinner.
